Hickson 68 in Cane Venatici
May 2019 - Picture of the Month
Apparently I'm still in galaxy mood, even if the days are getting longer here in the UK. Consequently I've decide feature a well known group of galaxies that's nice and high in Northern skies: Hickson 68.
The Hickson 68 group was featured in Owen's Galaxy of the Month column back in 2014. In his article he used an image by Bernhard Hubl, who's a frequent contributor to Picture of the Month.
I resolved to find another fine image of this group... it turned out to be surprisingly difficult. Eventually I found Thomas's website and this image was taken with a DSLR on a 10-inch scope over about nine hours. The field is wide enough to capture NGC 5371 too, which is fortunately as I think the detail in those spirals is fantastic.
It wasn't until later that I discovered that Owen made reference to the wonderfully labelled version of this image in his article. It's one of the things that caught my attention too and well worth a look.
